Every Morning Superfood Smoothie
Start your day feeling refreshed and energized with this delicious superfood smoothie.
I have been making a variation of this smoothie every single morning for the last 10 months and it’s because it makes me feel naturally energized and the perfect amount of full, and it literally takes 5-minutes to make.
This smoothie is packed with essential vitamins and minerals, protein, healthy fats, antioxidants, and electrolytes. As usual, I’m going to breakdown each and every ingredient so that you know exactly what it is doing to make you the healthiest version of you.
Get To know your food:
Coconut Water- Coconut water is an amazing smoothie base for many reasons. It is rich in vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, hydrating electrolytes, and it even has 2g of protein per cup. It contains antioxidants that modify free radicals so that they no longer can cause harm and supports heart health by reducing blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure. It also has been shown to combat diabetes and kidney stones.
Plant-Based Protein Powder- I use Vanilla Garden Of Life Raw Protein & Greens. One of the best things about this protein powder is that is doesn’t have that chalky taste and it’s not super sweet (basically it doesn’t taste like crap). It has 20g of plant protein, 6 organic greens and veggies, probiotics to make your gut happy, less than 1g of sugar, and no creepy additives. I’ve been using it for about 2 years and there is nothing else that compares in my book.
Mixed Berries- Berries are SO good and do so many good things for your body. They have a higher antioxidant activity than almost all other fruits which helps to prevent oxidative stress and improve immunity. They are amazing for digestive health since they are high in fiber and contain tons of nutrients including vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, and folate. They can help improve blood sugar and insulin response, lower cholesterol, and help fight inflammation. AND if you’re not already sold on the amazingness of berries: some studies have shown that the antioxidants in berries may help reduce skin wrinkling by blocking the production of enzymes that breakdown collagen.
Bananas- Bananas are loaded with fiber that keeps you full longer, feeds good gut bacteria, and promotes better digestion. They are naturally energizing because they have three natural sugars (glucose, fructose, and sucrose) that give you an immediate energy boost, but at the same time the keep blood sugar levels stable. They are full of potassium, vitamin B, vitamin C, and magnesium which all promote healthy bones, control high blood pressure, and give you glowing skin and hair. Lastly, they are full of tryptophan which the body converts to serotonin making you feel happier and healthier!
Ground Flaxseed- An excellent source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and fiber. Flaxseeds also contain folate, vitamin B6, magnesium, phosphorus, and copper. Make sure to eat your flaxseed ground so that your body can absorb them!
Maca Root Powder- This Peruvian superfood has TONS of benefits including: increased libido (wink, wink), increased energy and endurance, decreased erectile dysfunction, increased fertility, and reduced menopause symptoms. Also, the flavonoids in it are thought to improve mood and reduce anxiety, and maca it is thought to reduce blood pressure, sun damage, fight free radicals, and improve learning and memory.
Hemp Seeds- Another incredible superfood, hemp seeds are a complete source of protein, providing you with all 9 essential amino acids. They are also an amazing source of unsaturated fats, fiber, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc. Adding a tbsp or two into your morning routine will help your digestion and support healthy weight loss, reduce the risk for heart disease, AND improve the glow of your hair, skin, and nails.
Coconut Oil- ANOTHER superfood, coconut oil contains MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) that acts like a thermogenic in your body - that right, it helps you to burn more calories and fat at rest then you normally would. Once consumed, these fats go straight to your liver where they are used as quick source of energy or are turned into ketones which can be used by the brain cells for energy, making you sharper and fighting diseases like Alzheimer’s. Not only does it slim your waist, give you energy, and make you sharper, but also can act as an antibacterial to boost your immune system and fight disease.
Spinach- Loaded with nutrients and antioxidants, Spinach contains high amounts of plant protein, fiber, carotenoids, folic acid, iron, calcium, and vitamins A, C, K. There’s almost too much to write about spinach in this little blurb but basically it can decrease oxidative stress and the effects of aging, improve eye health, and prevent heart disease, cancer, and other diseases.
Kale- Kale is full of plant protein, folate, lutein, alpha-linolenic acid (an omega 3 fatty acid), and vitamins A, B, C, and K. It is great for eye and brain health, weight loss and maintenance, and digestion.
