Finding your Authentic Purpose + 9 Tips To Balance Your Sacral Chakra
Have you ever found yourself in a flow state?
You know, those times when you just effortlessly float through your day being the most productive, happy, and energized version of yourself. Everything is done with ease and grace and you feel like you’re on top of the world...
Well, living passionately, creatively, and with purpose is not always as easy as it feels like it should be. Eventually, we all find ourselves back in the dreaded “ebb” - Those times in life where we find ourselves wondering: What exactly am I even here to do? What is my purpose? Who am I, really? Why am I not happier in life? Why do I feel so dull and disconnected?
We all go there sometimes and thankfully, we eventually come back to those days, weeks, even months of just being in that flow state. Connected, open, fluid, and as a result: in bliss.
So, how can we get to that magical state of living passionately, creatively, and open more often?
While there are a lot of ways to practice getting there, I believe that it starts with balancing our sacral chakra. (If you’re not familiar with the chakras system, start by reading my blog on the Root Chakra first.)
Our Sacral Chakra - Svadhisthana - is our second chakra and is our center of creativity, pleasure, emotion, sexuality, and clairsentience. I believe that this is where we begin to discover true, Authentic Purpose in life. WHAT?! Yes, that’s right. I know it’s a bold statement and I’ll tell you why, but first a bit of background.
The sacral chakra forms during our 2nd year of life. This is a time during which we really start to recognize and acknowledge other beings. Our consciousness now includes the awareness of others and along with this awareness comes a desire to connect. This desire to connect sparks movement and change (hence the 2 year olds running around and touching/examining/accidentally destroying everything in their path).
“Change is a fundamental element of consciousness. It is what commands our attention, awakens us, makes us question...Without change there is no growth, no movement, no life. Consciousness thrives on change.”
A balanced sacral chakra forms a basis for our relationship with others and provides us with a crucial understanding of our own emotions and well as being able to feel and recognize others’ emotions. This allows us to differentiate and create boundaries between the two, allowing us to recognize our own emotions, personal pleasures, and creative outlets. This is vital for allowing our creative energy to flow.
Imbalances in our chakras can occur during development or later in life. Specific situations that can cause blockages in the sacral chakra include: Stifled creativity, stifled emotions, being taught that sexuality is bad, and being made to feel guilty for doing things you enjoy.
An unbalanced sacral chakra can be deficient or excessive. A deficient sacral chakra can lead to rigidity in your body, beliefs, or behavior. It can also lead to emotional numbness or insensitivity, fear of change, and lack of passion, desire, or excitement.
An excessive sacral chakra can lead to sexual addiction, obsessive attachments, addiction to stimulation including food, alcohol, and drugs, and excessive sensitivity and dependency.
When we can learn to tap into our emotions and look within, we can discover our true passions in life and live creatively. This is that flow state that we also seek to find and this flow state is individual to each and every one of us. This individual flow state is the path to our unique purpose in life.
What brings you pleasure? What sparks your creativity? What brings you into that “Flow State”? What makes your heart sing? Answer those questions and discover your Authentic Purpose.
10 Tips To Balance Your Sacral Chakra
#1 Verbal Affirmations
Pick one of these verbal affirmations to use in meditation or throughout your day. You can write them where you will see them or repeat them outloud or to yourself. Say it, read it, use it until you feel it.
I am fluid like water.
Pleasure is sacred to me.
I am in tune with my creativity.
My emotions are balanced.
I am a vibrant, creative, sexual being.
#2 Chanting
Each chakra has a Bija (seed sound mantra) whose particular vibration is said to be in harmony with that of the chakra. By chanting it’s seed sound mantra, you can clear blockages and bring Svadhisthana back into balance.
Seed Sound Mantra: VAM - start by setting a timer for 2 minutes. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in, on your exhale chant VAM and try to feel the vibration clearing and balancing your sacral chakra. Repeat until your timer goes off. As you become comfortable, set your alarm for 3 minutes, then 4 minutes, and so on.
#3 Sacral Meditation
Find a comfortable seat, sitting up tall. Place your palms over your sacral area and close down your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then open your mouth and sigh the breath out. Repeat that 2 more times, then find a calm, natural breath.
Notice your breath moving in and out of your body like a wave. Coming in through your nostrils, flowing like smooth water down your throat, into your chest, then your ribs, then your upper belly, and then your lower belly. Notice it flow smoothly back out. Out of your lower belly, then upper belly, then ribs, then chest, up through the throat and out of your nose.
Then begin to visualize your sacral chakra. Picture a bright orange orb spinning around and around. Visualize the speed at which it is spinning. Is it moderate? Fast? Slow? See if you can begin to feel it spinning.
Watch as the bright orange orb begins to lose its shape, melting into a water-like consistency. Slowly spilling orange light up into your belly, down into your pelvis. Flowing up into your heart space and down your hips and thighs. Spreading up through your shoulders and down your arms, then all the way down your legs through your feet. Watch as the water flows all the way up through your head, spilling out of your crown.
Feel your entire being as water - the essence of all forms, yet formless. Feel the ebb and flow of your entire being. You are the one that feels, that moves, that flows.
Take a deep breath in, then a deep breath out. Namaste.
#4 Practice Yoga Postures
Practice the following yoga postures for 5-8 breaths each. As you practice each one, physically feel your hips and groin opening. Energetically feel your body fluidly moving in between and through each posture.
Child’s Pose
Cat Cow With Hip Circles
High Plank - Downward Facing Dog - from downdog, roll forward like a wave to high plank, repeat 5-8x
Malasana
Half Pigeon
Supta Baddha Konasana
#5 Use Crystals and Essential Oils:
Meditate with or carry around one of the following crystals:
Carnelian
Moonstone
Tiger’s Eye
Orange Calcite
Coral
Use the following incense or essential oils while meditating, relaxing, or practicing self-care:
Gardenia
Orange
Ylang Ylang
Sandalwood
#6 Spark Your Creativity
What ignites your creativity? If you’re not sure, try painting, dancing, singing, writing. Even if you don’t think you are good at something, do it anyway.
#7 Drink lots of water and eat juicy fruits.
#8 Get in the water.
Take a bath or go swimming. Immerse yourself in water. If you are taking a bath make it a magical, ritualistic experience. Light a sandalwood incense and some candles, and place your Sacral balancing crystals around your tub.
#9 Breathwork - Nadi Shodhana
This pranayama exercise is also known as Alternate Nostril Breathing. It balances the right and the left hemispheres of the brain, the Ida and the Pingala Nadis, and the masculine and feminine energies.
Start in a comfortable seat with your legs crossed. Place your left palm face up on your left thigh in chin mudra by touching your index finger to your thumb and extending the other three fingers out long. Bend your right arm and place your index and middle fingers between your eyebrows. Then, place your thumb on your right nostril and your ring and pinky fingers on your left nostril.
Plug your right nostril and take a slow inhale through your left nostril. Pause for a moment at the top of your inhale to retain the breath. Then plug your left nostril and exhale through your right nostril. Pause at the bottom of your exhale.
Inhale through your right nostril, pausing at the top. Plug your right nostril and exhale through your left nostril, pausing at the bottom. That is one round. Continue your alternate nostril breathing for 7 more rounds.
#9 Journal
Journaling is one of the best ways to discover self-limiting subconscious beliefs and blockages, and to create goals and connect with yourself. Use the following journaling questions to create awareness of any imbalances in your sacral chakra and to create a game plan to bring it into balance.
